YONKERS POLICE DEPARTMENT: Multiple People Were Shot In The City Of Hills In Two Separate Overnight Shootings (UPDATED FOUR TIMES)

YONKERS (WESTCHESTER COUNTY) NY: Five people were shot in less than two hours in in two different incidents in Yonkers.

Mutual aid request to the Westchester County Police and New York State Police was called in to assist with the large crowds gathering at both shooting scenes.

The exact circumstances surrounding the shoot of multiple people in southwest Yonkers are not known, but the police department is promising a press conference in the morning.

Reports said that the first victims were transported to to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx.

The Yonkers Police Department Released The Following Statement:

"The Yonkers Police Department is currently investigating two separate, but related, shooting incidents that occurred late in the evening on 7/16/22.

Just after 9:00PM on 7/16/22, Yonkers Police responded to the area of 139 Locust Hill Avenue on a report of shots fired.

Units located two shooting victims at that location and quickly arranged for them both to be transported to an area hospital.

Both victims are listed as being in stable condition at this time.

Just before 11:00PM on the same date, Yonkers Police responded to the area of 43 School Street on an additional report of shots fired.

Units located three shooting victims at that location and again quickly arranged for their transport to an area hospital.

These three victims do not have a condition listed at this time."

UPDATE #1: Initially Yonkers Police detectives said the two shootings were possibly connected, but later said a connection could not be made in the shootings that left three adults in critical condition.

"The initial shooting took place during a memorial service at a park, that seems to have started this chain of events," Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said at the Sunday morning briefing.

Mayor Mike Spano said, “I’m here reporting an incident of potential gang violence and a shooting in our community,” said Spano.

Early estimates suggest more than 100 people were in the vicinity of the park when the shots were fired.

Detectives were still working the scene when reports came in of a second shooting happened blocks away.

The victims in the first shooting were an 18-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man.

They both were hospitalized. The woman was shot in the right elbow and is expected to survive.

The man was shot in the chest and is in critical condition.

At the second shooting less than two hours later Yonkers Police offers were called to help three gunshot victims - a 42-year-old man, 30-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man.

The 42-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were in critical condition.

The other man was in stable condition.

No arrests have been made by the Yonkers Police Department and they have yet to release any information on the suspect(s).

UPDATE #2: Yonkers Police Department Press Release in connection with the multiple shooting incident from yesterday (07/16/22)

"The Yonkers Police Department is currently investigating two shooting incidents that occurred late in the evening on July 16th, 2022.

At approximately 9:15PM on July 16th, 2022, the Yonkers Police Department responded to the area of Pitkin Park on Locust Hill Avenue on a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, units located two victims of gunshot wounds. These victims were quickly transported to an area hospital.

The first victim is an 18-year-old female who was shot in her right elbow. Her condition is stable at this time.

The second victim is an 18-year-old male who was shot in the right side of his chest just below the collar bone. Doctors report that he may have a punctured lung.

This male is in critical but stable condition at this time.Later in the evening, just before 11:00PM, the Yonkers Police Department responded to the area of 43 School Street on an additional report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, units located three victims of gunshot wounds. The first victim is a 42-year-old male who was shot once in the back. Doctors found that the bullet passed through to his chest.

He is in critical but stable condition at this time. The second victim is a 30-year-old female who was shot once in her right arm.

Doctors found that the bullet then struck her chest cavity and is now lodged in her left arm. She is also currently in critical but stable condition.

The third victim is a 41-year-old male who was shot once in the back. Doctors report that the bullet appeared to hit his spleen and colon.

This male is in stable condition at this time.Both scenes were cordoned off as criminal investigations commenced.

Detectives from our Major Case Squad, Crime Scene Unit, and Gang Unit all began in depth investigations into both of these incidents.

Though it was a possibility at the onset of this investigation that these incidents were related, that cannot be confirmed at this time.

“The Yonkers Police Department does not tolerate senseless acts of violence in the likes of what we saw last night,” said Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza.

“Those that wish to do harm to our residents in such heinous acts have no place in this city. Our investigators will be working tirelessly to identify and apprehend the perpetrators for both of these incidents.”
